Not lost in translation ...
MO'S victory is largely thanks to the accurate and delicate work of his translators, Luan Meijian, deputy director of Fudan University's Chinese Contemporary Literature Creation and Research Center, said yesterday.
Mo's work is translated by Howard Goldblatt, Research Professor of Chinese at the University of Notre Dame, into English and by Chantal Andro, of Paris Diderot University, into French. Both have played important roles in translating modern Chinese work.
Other Chinese writers, including Wang Anyi, Jia Pingwa and Yu Hua are not so lucky to have such top-level translators, he said.
"The international book market has become very interested in Chinese literature in the past decade," said Chen Sihe, a professor in Fudan University's Literature Department.
"Many foreign book publishers hire professionals to look for good-quality Chinese work and translate them into other languages, which was impossible in the 1980s," he said.
