Nude photos put focus on smartphone data security

A WOMAN in her 20s was shocked to find her naked pictures, which she had already deleted from her broken iPhone, displayed openly at a phone store in Ningbo, east China's Zhejiang Province.

Experts are warning that smartphones, such as iPhone, may not be well equipped to protect the owner's privacy as photos and other data which are deleted can be easily recovered using a software, the Zhejiang-based Qianjiang Evening News said yesterday.

In the present incident, a man, Liu Shenghao, said on his microblog on Weibo.com on Tuesday that the young woman took her broken iPhone to a phone store in Ningbo City for repairs, but a "skillful" technician not only repaired the phone, but also recovered her naked pictures which had been deleted long time ago.

Liu, who is the woman's friend, said on his microblog that the repairman copied the photos from her iPhone onto one of the store's sample phones, making the pictures available to every customer.

A store official conceded the naked pictures were released by its staff. The official who was not named told the newspaper the woman visited the store to reclaim her repaired phone but was shocked to find her naked images displayed in a sample phone.

The woman's boyfriend rushed to the store, seeking an explanation, and alerted the police, the newspaper said.

The incident has sparked a heated discussion online with many raising questions about how deleted pictures can be recovered from a smartphone.

A technician surnamed Zhu told the newspaper it was possible to recover any deleted photos or other data by using a software, which can be downloaded from many websites.
