Nurse held after baby stolen from his mother

A NURSE has been detained by police in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in connection with a case where a newborn baby was stolen from his mother.

Some police officers and hospital staff have been suspended and are under investigation, local government said yesterday.

Liang Shaohua, a nurse at Chifeng Reproductive Health Hospital, is suspected of child trafficking.

She allegedly sold an infant boy last November, after telling his 18-year-old mother that her child had been stillborn.

Police said  the baby was sold for 40,000 yuan (US$6,600) and taken to the village of Ar Khorchin Banner, 300 kilometers from Chifeng Village.

A man named Wen Guoqiang was raising the child there, CCTV reported.

Earlier, Chifeng police had rejected calls that they should investigate, claiming there were no “criminal facts,” according to CCTV.

The hospital had also said nothing was amiss.

When details of the case emerged, Liang was detained and Wen questioned.

Two Ar Khorchin Banner policemen, surnamed Zhang and Liu — who are said to have refused to investigate the case — and the operating theater manager at the Chifeng Reproductive Health Hospital have also been suspended and are under investigation.

On Wednesday, at the request of the mother, a local government department ran a DNA test which confirmed the biological relationship between her and the child.

The baby is currently being taken care of at a hospital and is said to be in good health.
