Nurse knocks knife from hostage-taker’s hand in Nanchang

A YOUNG nurse in Nanchang, capital of eastern Jiangxi Province, managed to save herself by knocking a knife from the hand of a man who held her hostage for an hour yesterday afternoon.

The nurse, surnamed Wan, at Nanchang No. 1 Hospital was reported to be in stable condition after getting two stitches on the neck after the incident. The suspect, a 23-year-old Nanchang native, is in police custody, Beijing News reported today.

The suspect, accompanied by his family, arrived at the hospital around noon, claiming he felt pain everywhere. The doctor asked him to have an X-ray taken. They didn’t appear to be any dispute, according to a medical worker at the scene who declined to be named.

The man, however, brandished a knife at around 5pm and threatened Wan, demanding to let him use her cell phone. Wan suggested he use a hospital telephone, but he grabbed her mobile phone, the doctor said.

Later the suspect forced Wan to go with him to an emergency treatment room and made her call the police and media. When he tried to switch the knife to his other hand, Wan knocked the knife free. Both of them fell to the ground and police rushed in and subdued the man.

The suspect, according to Wan, claimed he wanted to call police and contact his mother because he thought his brother planned to kill him. When he realized the police were outside, he became highly agitated because he was afraid of being shot, Wan said.

Police arranged for his mother to talk to him late yesterday, the newspaper reported.
