Nurse loses baby in attack by 3 ‘drunks’

THREE men have been detained for their roles in a violent outburst at a hospital in southwest China’s Sichuan Province in which a pregnant nurse lost her unborn baby, police said yesterday.

The incident happened on Wednesday at the People’s Hospital of Gulin County in Luzhou, news website newssc.org reported on Thursday.

The men entered the hospital about 9:40pm and asked to see a doctor as one of them, a 53-year-old surnamed Xu, had hurt his eyes.

“I could smell alcohol on them and they seemed to be drunk,” said Wang Ting, the nurse who was alone on duty at the time.

“I told them that the doctors were busy and asked them to wait for a while, but they started to curse at me,” she said.

Police later identified Xu’s associates as a 25-year-old surnamed Li and a 35-year-old surnamed Huang.

Wang said she tried to placate the men, but then: “One of them pushed me to the ground.”

When a group of doctors and nurses arrived on the scene, a scuffle broke out and as Wang got to her feet she was pushed to the ground for a second time. A doctor was also slightly hurt in the scuffle.

Wang said she was aware that Li had pushed her down on at least one of the two occasions.

After the event, she complained of pains in her stomach and was taken for an emergency scan.

Doctors were unable to detect a heartbeat for the baby and the child was delivered stillborn.

Police did not make clear how they apprehended the three suspects, but thepaper.cn reported yesterday that they are all now in custody.

Deputy Public Security Minister Huang Ming urged Sichuan police to deal swiftly with the case.
