Nurses almost killed a premature baby

A premature baby was put in a plastic bag and left in the toilet of a Guangdong Province hospital on October 26 because a nurse said the "girl" was dead, but 30 minutes later, the family found the baby was actually a boy and still alive.

The baby is now being treated in the neonatal care unit of the same hospital, Nanhai District Red Cross Hospital, in Foshan City. Hospital officials refused to comment on the incident, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.

Liu Dongmei, the 23-year-old mother from Jiangxi Province, said she gave birth about one month before the expected date.

Her husband Wang Haizhang told the newspaper that an antenatal examination on October 25 showed everything was normal. He said a doctor surnamed Cao was on duty that night but she was absent and left two nurses in the delivery room.

The baby was born at 5:17am, but Wang didn't hear any cry. Then a nurse came out and told him that the baby was dead. She put the newborn in a yellow plastic bag.

Wang was confused for about 10 minutes. Then he called his sister and her husband who arrived 20 minutes later. They requested to see the baby and the doctor agreed. When they opened the bag in the toilet, they saw the baby was actually a boy and still moving.

A nurse quickly took the baby to the neonatal care unit and a doctor from the pediatrics department said the boy would be fine in one week.

The hospital has admitted to the mistake made by its nurses and is still investigating the incident, the paper said.
