Nurses conduct surgeries in non-profit hospital

A non-profit hospital is hit by a scandal that its nurses performed operations; some departments were outsourced; and the hospital sold medicines at extremely high prices.

The Zhongshan Hospital in Kunming, capital of southwestern Yunnan Province was accused of having nurses perform surgeries, a practice forbidden by the Ministry of Health, according to a blog posted by one of its doctors.

The private-owned hospital charged patients an average of 4,000 yuan (US$631.2) for a surgery, today's New Express cited the anonymous doctor.

The Ministry of Health has begun a probe into the allegations, the paper said.

Health officials in Kunming confirmed that the non-profit hospital rent out some departments to contractors in the name of cooperation,the paper said.

These contractors paid rents and a deposit of about 100,000 yuan to run the departments, such as the ophthalmology department, one contractor said.

The hospital was also accused of selling medicines 50 times their market prices. An investigation into this allegation is still ongoing, the paper said.
