Nursing home elders paralyze oil field by cutting power line
THE theft of a power cable by two elderly waste collectors has shut down 46 oil wells in the Shengli Oil Filed in east China's Shandong Province, China News Service reported yesterday.
The two suspects surnamed Ding and Zhang, both 78, live in a local nursing home. They have no children and no income, forcing them to make a living by picking and selling wastes.
They found an electric pole lying on the ground a few days ago and went back with pliers and a handsaw to cut the power cable from the pole to sell as waste metal.
The cut cable fell onto another electric line and caused a short circle, halting the operation of the 46 oil wells.
Police found clues to the theft in a local recycling depot and tracked down Ding and Zhang in the nursing home.
