Nursing home employee detained after patient's death
POLICE in Hubei Province have detained a nursing home employee who allegedly caused a 68-year-old mentally retarded man's death after he hung him upside down for a whole night.
An investigation found Ding Congjian, 59, one of only two workers at the government-funded nursing home in Huanggang City, used rope to tie the arms and legs of Chu Yunjian. Ding then hung him upside down outside a window on November 25, Beijing News reported today.
Xiao Benqua, who lives in the center, said Chu threw his own bedpan out the window, which enraged Ding. Chu also didn't eat that day. Xiao told the newspaper they didn't dare untie Chu as they feared being beaten by Ding. He frequently beat or scolded patients, the report said, citing Xiao.
According to police, Ding claimed Chu died of coronary heart disease when he was found dead the next morning. However, Chu's nephew was skeptical and reported to the police. An autopsy determined Chu died of exposure and starvation, the report said.
