Odd-plate drivers told to get off highway

HUNDREDS of motorists driving vehicles displaying odd-numbered plates were ordered off the G60 Hukun Highway yesterday because they were in violation of a temporary alternate day rule imposed for security reasons in advance of the G20 Summit in Hangzhou.
By 10am, about 1,100 motorists were stopped at the Fengjing check station in neighboring Zhejiang Province and told they had to take a different route because only even-numbered plates were permitted under the rule, which came into effect yesterday.
The drivers were told they could either take the G320 or turn back.
Vehicle searches for security reason are also being intensified at the check station in the run-up to the international conference. All drivers will be required to show their licenses and open their trunks for inspection.
Police there said they have checked about 45,000 cars and 140,000 people in the past week among whom 15 were found to be criminals wanted by the authorities, 22 were drug users, and nine people were found to be in possession of “dangerous objects.”
The temporary traffic restriction and tighter security measures will be in place until September 6.
