Office workers stressed, finds survey
LESS than three percent of office workers in big Chinese cities are healthy and most of them blame their stress on soaring house prices, according to a survey released today.
The research conducted by Health Maintenance Organization China and the People's Daily Online investigated three million white-collar workers in 31 provinces and municipalities. Forty-six percent of them said their dream to own a home has become a grueling nightmare.
Thirty-eight percent said their parents' health concerns them most, especially for those whose parents live in another city. Young workers also said they are stressed out when parents push them to marry.
Scientists said the study was the first of its kind to look specifically at white-collar workers with high incomes.
Stress for office workers was a significantly bigger problem in large cities, according to the study, Shanghai ranks third on the list of the most stressful cities in China, following Beijing and Shenzhen.
The research found that the top three potential killers of office workers are cancer, heart attack, and stroke.
Among all those polled, 76 percent were not healthy and nearly 60 percent said they frequently experienced overwork.
