Officer died after drinking session
A POLICE officer said to have died “in the line of duty” had, in fact, fallen during a drinking session with colleagues and suffered a head injury, it was revealed yesterday.
Wang Huafeng, chief of police in Qimen County in Anhui Province, said Zhu Lin had “sacrificed his life for the job,” so that his family could get 700,000 yuan (US$113,500) in compensation. There was to be an additional 600,000 yuan from the police officials involved.
But the family were told to give up their demand for the truth about what happened, the Beijing Morning Post reported yesterday. When the family continued to press their demand, the payments were suspended, the newspaper said.
Zhu fell on January 8 after Kang Guanghui, a police official in Jinzipai Town, had taken him and three others to visit their counterparts in Shanli Town.
In the evening, 13 people from the two towns ate at a local restaurant, and eight police officials drank six bottles of spirits and 11 bottles of beer, the paper said. One of the diners said that Zhu had fallen when going down stairs and hit his head.
Zhu was sent to a county hospital but, due to his severe injuries, was transferred to Huangshan City People’s Hospital. Over the next few weeks, the county police called on experts from Hangzhou and Shanghai to treat Zhu and covered medical bills of more than 300,000 yuan. On March 26, Zhu was sent to a Shanghai hospital but he died on June 13.
On May 20, Kang and Zheng Xiaowu, Shanli’s police chief, were removed from their posts.
