Officers accused of torturing boy, 15
AUTHORITIES in eastern China are investigating five police officers who allegedly tortured a 15-year-old boy in custody, causing him severe brain damage and putting him into a vegetative state.
The boy, Wang En'hui, is still in intensive care with life-threatening skull fractures and other injuries in a provincial hospital in Hefei, Anhui Province, yesterday's Guangxi Daily reported.
Wang was admitted to a Yingshang County hospital on August 13 after he fell into a coma while he was in police custody on burglary charges. He was transferred to the provincial hospital as his condition deteriorated. There, doctors said the boy had entered a vegetative state.
His parents still don't know what happened in the detention house. Wang's father told reporters he saw several injuries on Wang's body, apparently caused by beatings since he was detained in February.
Wang's father took photos and questioned officials at the detention house, who said the boy had injured himself in a careless fall. But later, after he checked the surveillance video, the house's deputy director said the boy had been beaten by five officers.
