Officers catch fugitive

POLICE have captured an escaped prisoner after a 14-day intense manhunt, authorities said yesterday.

Wang Zhenqing, the 43-year-old escaped inmate, was caught by police yesterday morning in his home county of Dancheng, Henan Province, officers said.

Wang escaped a prison in Hebei Province on September 11, sparking the manhunt in which hundreds of officers were involved, police added.

In January, Wang was sentenced to 10 years in prison for theft.

Previous press reports said Wang had avoided four checkpoints and scaled a 5-meter-high prison fence with a rope made of woven bags, though prison administrators didn't confirm these accounts.

Local authorities had offered a reward of 100,000 yuan (US$15,654) to anyone who captured the fugitive, while 20,000 yuan was offered to anyone providing information leading to Wang's capture.

The prison break has sparked a heated discussion on weibo.com, a popular microblog site. Weibo users questioned the administration of prisons and demanded authorities disclose more information about the escape.

The last reported prison break in Hebei was in 2008. A fugitive stole a vehicle and drove through the prison fence. He was captured six days later.
