Officers face court over torture
A central China county police chief and five officers will be prosecuted for torturing an innocent farmer into confessing to murder – leading to him being jailed for 11 years.
Ding Zhongqiu, the deputy police chief of Zhecheng County who handled farmer Zhao Zuohai's case in 1999, is among those to be prosecuted, Chengdu Business Daily reported today.
Another five police officers who allegedly tortured Zhao during interrogation will also face prosecution. The six were all promoted after Zhao was thrown into jail and the case sealed.
But they did not expect Zhao's alleged victim, whose headless "body" was found under a well in 1999, to walk back to their hometown alive on April 30.
The convicted "murderer" was later acquitted and paid 770,000 yuan (US$113,698) for his wrongful imprisonment.
Prosecutors in Suixian County said Zhao was tortured for 33 days, during which he was battered with clubs and threatened with a pistol in his mouth. The police would not let him go to sleep and exploded firecrackers on his head.
They also detained Zhao's wife for a long time to obtain evidence. The prosecutors blame Ding for hurrying officers to rush the case and conniving in the torture.
Zhao was forced to confess nine times so that his confession would be exactly like the police's version.
The county's court has not decided a date for the trial.
The Public Security Bureau in Shangqiu City in Henan said last month that they arrested three men responsible for the headless body in Zhao's case. The three allegedly confessed that they killed a local man in 1997.
