Official allegedly beats reporters probing project
POLICE are investigating allegations that a government official in central China's Henan Province held a gun against a reporter and beat and threatened several others after they tried to expose a construction scandal, Nanfang Daily reported yesterday.
Niu Hao, the 28-year-old deputy director of the Housing Management Bureau of Shaoling District in Luohe, beat and threatened five journalists to prevent his illegal real estate development from exposure, the Nanfang Daily said.
Last month, three reporters surnamed Geng, Zhu and Yuan were stopped and beaten by four people on their way to the local housing management bureau after they investigated the illegal project, the report said. One of the four was Niu, who was also a project shareholder, the report said.
Yuan said he was also threatened with a gun in the hand of the young deputy director.
"I was frightened. I seemed to hear the sound of a gun being loaded and I was so scared of it going off," recalled Yuan, according to the report.
Niu later found two more journalists, surnamed Guo and Zhou, who were working on the story, and also beat them, Yuan said.
The two and Yuan were forced to write down a promise to give up pursuing legal action, the report said.
