Official arrested for libel
A SENIOR district official in south China's Guangdong Province has been arrested for libel by getting other people to post online gossip about his rival.
Liang Ruiqiang, vice director of Foshan City's Gaoming District, also allegedly took bribes, yesterday's Guangzhou Daily reported, citing sources close to Foshan People's Procuratorate Office.
Liang allegedly decided to defame Ma Liangzhao, Gaoming District's Party secretary, after Ma asked for an audit of a transport company under Liang's administration. Liang took the audit as an insult to his authority.
He asked his friend Liang Weixiong, a local businesswoman, to write letters to the disciplinary authorities as well as online posts to defame Ma, according to prosecutors.
One of Liang's relatives, Lin Jianbo, alleged in letters and online that Ma had taken bribes from urban construction projects.
To support the charge, the posts said Ma's mistress and her lover stole more than 5 million yuan (US$733,925) worth of cash and valuables from Ma's home in August 2008. Other government officials were also named.
The posts roused huge public outcry on Gaoming's online forums last August and were soon widely copied to national Websites.
A month later, Foshan police and disciplinary authorities said their investigation concluded the posts were all lies.
Police caught Liang in October as well Liang Weixiong and Lin Jianbo. They were arrested for libel in November.
