Official blames blackmailing mistress for bribes

A FORMER top law maker on trial for corruption in south China's Guangdong Province told the court that he had taken bribes because his pregnant mistress was blackmailing him.

Qiu Huosheng, 60, former vice dean of Zengcheng City Committee of Chinese People's Congress, was tried in Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court yesterday for allegedly asking and taking 1.05 million yuan (US$153,808) in bribes from five people from 1999 to 2002, today's Guangzhou Daily reported.

Prosecutors said he asked the money in return for providing benefits helping people with their jobs.

Qiu admitted bribery but said he was forced to get cash after his mistress surnamed Han blackmailed him and said she was pregnant. She pocketed 980,000 yuan of the 1.05 million yuan he took.

But Han denied the accusation, saying Qiu had offered her the money.

Qiu returned most of the money, according to the newspaper.
