Official defends budget homes for government workers

A NORTHWEST China county official has defended the local government's introduction of a budget-home program for its workers.

"All the beneficiaries are eligible for the program as they are rated as low-income people," Zhao Hong, vice director of Meixian County Urban Construction Commission in Shaanxi Province, told today's Sanqin Daily.

But he didn't specify the county's standard of low-income families.

More than 80 percent of the first beneficiaries, or 233 families, of the cheap home program are government workers in Meixian, the newspaper said, quoting a list of names publicized for review.

The housing complex has 1,548 homes in 39 buildings covering 208 mu, according to the commission.

The biggest apartment is 137 square meters, compared with the cap of 60 square meters according to the State Council's rule.

The county government is processing the paperwork for the program and approval will be ready soon, according to the urban construction authority.

Construction for the first phase started last month.

Government workers are usually regarded as well paid, with benefits in medical cover and social security.
