Official detained after woman picking seeds shot by hunter

A LAW enforcement official in central China’s Hunan Province has been detained by police after a woman collecting seeds was fatally shot by a hunter.

Xiao Weidong, from the Zhengxiang Branch of the Food and Drug Administration of Hengyang City, is being held on suspicion of accidentally killing the woman, Xinhua news agency reported.

The official, who is in his 50s, turned himself in to police after the incident last Sunday, said Xinhua.

Local police said Xiao told them that he had accidentally injured a villager.

An initial investigation found that Xiao illegally owned a double-barreled shotgun and had been out hunting wild boar, said Xinhua.

The victim, 57-year-old Luo Yunying from Yangjiao Village of Zhengxiang County, had been out collecting camellia seeds, reported Xinhua.

These are used to produce tea seed oil, a popular cooking oil in parts of China, including Hunan.

Luo’s son, Dong Changwu, told the Beijing News when his mother did not return for lunch, relatives launched a search. They found her dead from gunshot wounds beneath a tree on a hillside 500 meters from her home.

She had been hit on the left side of her head and body by shotgun pellets, said Dong, adding that pellets had also struck the trunk of the tree.

Dong said that an autopsy was due to take place.

“Neighbors saw three cars driving into the hills and people on another hill heard shots at around 9am,” said Dong.

The cars, included one with law enforcement markings, left an hour later, he said.

Police are now trying to trace the other hunters.
