Official detained for murder
A SENIOR official in the central Henan Province who claimed "I am Li Gang" after being detained by police for allegedly hacking a man to death has rekindled public anger triggered last month by a hit-and-run driver who shouted he was the son of Li Gang, a high-ranking official.
The suspect, who was reportedly an official in the highway bureau and was also named Li Gang, allegedly hacked his friend, surnamed Ren, in the head and legs several times in a residential complex in Zhengzhou City, the provincial capital, news portal Hinews.cn reported yesterday.
Ren later died of massive bleeding in hospital.
Li kept shouting "I am Li Gang," when being subdued by a police officer, as a video clip aired on local TV showed.
His neighbor, who declined to give his name, said Li was drunk and had been fighting with his wife before the incident. Li started stabbing Ren when he tried to mediate.
The neighbor told reporters that Li had been imprisoned, but was released through the influence of his father, who is alleged to be a high-ranking official. Upon his release from prison, Li was appointed to a senior position in the highway bureau for Zhengzhou City.
What Li said is the latest reminder of the similar claim by an -intoxicated driver who killed one girl and seriously injured another before driving away on a university campus in Hebei Province last month.
