Official faces libel charge and 10 years in jail

AN official in Foshan, south China's Guangdong Province, was indicted today for libel by getting others to post online rumors to tarnish his rival's reputation and taking 150,000 yuan (US$21,876) in bribes.

Liang Ruiqiang, deputy chief of the city's Gaoming District, could face up to 10 years in prison, reported today's Guangzhou Daily.

Liang allegedly tried to defame Ma Liangzhao, the Party secretary of Gaoming District, after Ma ordered an audit of a transport company under Liang's administration last year.

Liang took the audit as an insult and asked his friend Liang Weixiong, a businesswoman, to write letters to the city's disciplinary authorities and make online posts to accuse Ma of taking bribes from urban project contractors.

To support the charge, the posts said Ma's mistress and her lover stole more than 5 million yuan worth of cash and valuables from Ma's home in August 2008.

The posts roused public anger in local online forums and soon spread to national Websites.
