Official 'helping police'

A SENIOR official, who assisted five presidents of the Chinese Football Association in the national team's financial affairs, is helping police investigating corruption in the sport.

Citing a source close to the investigation team, Oriental Morning Post yesterday said Shao Wenzhong, general manager of the China Football Industry Development Corp, has been "taken by police" to help their investigation.

Wei Di, vice chairman of CFA, told the China News Service that Shao was only "helping the police to check some accounts and there's no big deal."

Shao was a veteran in charge of financial management for football in China.

His company was founded by the CFA in 1993.

Nan Yong and Yang Yimin, former CFA directors now under arrest for corruption charges, both served in the company as managers.

The Ministry of Public Security announced in January that police had arrested former CFA vice chairmen Nan Yong and Yang Yimin, as well as Zhang Jianqiang, former director of CFA's referee committee, on bribery charges.

Dozens of former club managers and players have so far been questioned or arrested by police over allegations of manipulating match results and gambling.
