Official in poor county took millions in bribes
A FORMER senior official in one of China's poorest counties has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking 10.56 million yuan (US$1.61 million) in bribes and having property worth 3.49 million yuan he couldn't account for.
Wang Xianmin, 43, former Party Secretary of Tanchang County in Gansu Province, was sentenced at the Intermediate People's Court of Baiyin City, the Procuratorial Daily reported yesterday.
During his three-year tenure from 2006, Wang abused his position to take massive bribes while more than half the county's villagers were struggling under the national poverty line.
The county's annual net income for rural residents reached 1,510 yuan per head in 2009, Gansu Economic News reported previously.
Prosecutors said Wang took 11.08 million yuan in bribes from 14 contractors to help them get their projects approved by government.
They also said he accepted three properties worth 2.58 million yuan in Sichuan Province from another local contractor, Li Chaoquan, and 1.03 million yuan in bribes from Niu Foquan, a local taxi company manager, to help the latter's investment in mining.
Meanwhile, Wang was said to have received 860,000 yuan in cash and shopping cards from officials who visited him when he was sick or during festivals. In return, Wang helped them gain promotion.
All of Wang's property was confiscated. The court also deprived him of his political rights.
Under Chinese law, sentences like the one handed down to Wang are usually commuted to life imprisonment.
