Official in sex tape scandal challenges charges
LEI Zhengfu, the first to fall under the spotlight for the sex tape scandal that brought down 21 senior officials in Chongqing in western China, denied the bribery charges against him in court today.
The former Party secretary of Chongqing's Beibei District was accused of taking nearly 3.16 million yuan in bribes between 2007 and 2012 when he was the district mayor. His corruption came to light after he was caught in a sex tape scandal.
Lei appeared calm while listening to charges read by prosecutors in the Chongqing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court. He first thanked the prosecutors for taking care of his family then refuted the amount of bribes in the charges and offered more details about the sex tape scandal.
He said he realized his sex with mistress Zhao Hongxia, a member of an extortion ring, had been secretly videotaped as early as in 2008. He complained to Zhao's boss Xiao Ye.
Xiao convinced him that the video footages had been destroyed. Afterwards he asked Lei to lend him 3 million yuan. Lei said he didn't embezzle state assets but asked a construction contractor to give Xiao the money. Xiao later returned only 1 million yuan to the contractor.
Xiao, Zhao and other four suspects will face charges of extortion at a court in the city's Yubei District, but the trial will not be open to the public, the CCTV reported.
