Official jailed for life

AN official in eastern China was sentenced life in prison yesterday for hiring two thugs to beat an informer to death.
Chen Lianrong, Party secretary of a community in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, was found guilty of battery and embezzlement, China News Service reported yesterday.
Lu Xueying, wife of the victim Shen Shuigen, was satisfied with the sentence, the report said.
In 1988, the Datieguan community set up a company under its collective ownership. Chen became its legal representative and took control of 51 percent of its shares by the end of 2001, and by 2004 he had taken control of the remainder of the company.
His ownership was strongly opposed by local residents. Many reported Chen and his company to the police, claiming he was involved in illegal land requisition, building and embezzling collective assets.
Shen, one of the informers, was stabbed at the community at 7:45pm on December 15, 2007, by two men hired by Chen. Shen died from his wounds on February 2, 2008.
