Official jailed over fatal traffic accident
A COURT in Shanxi Province has sentenced local official Li Yi to six years in prison for traffic offenses that caused the death of senior provincial political adviser Jin Yinhuan, a leading financial magazine has reported.
Yingze District People's Court in Taiyuan, capital of the northern China province, also sentenced Li's driver Li Zhifu to one year in prison with 12 months probation, Caijin magazine reported .
The accident occurred at about 1:40pm on October 11 last year, when Jin, chairwoman of the provincial political consultative committee, was traveling with her secretary and driver on the expressway between Xinzhou and Taiyuan.
Jin's vehicle was hit from behind by a car driven by Li, vice chairman of the political consultative committee of Xinzhou City.
The 56-year old Jin and her secretary were severely injured in the collision and later died in hospital. The driver was also injured but survived.
Li was accused of bringing his driver to the site after the incident to take blame for the accident.
Local police detained both Lis, and Li Yi was later charged with traffic offenses.
After a trial which lasted seven and a half hours, Li said in a final statement to the court: "I will try my best to compensate, even selling all my families'assets."
