Official: journalists should serve the Party, not the people

A phone interview with a government official in southwest Guizhou Province has drawn a lot of hits after it went online. It showed an arrogant bureaucrat talking on the phone that "journalists should speak for the Party rather than for the people."

Wen Yongdong, a Bijie City official posted in Guiyang, the provincial capital, was heard talking to a Guizhou TV reporter that "Journalists are the mouthpiece of the Party. You have got to be clear on which side you stand."

He was interviewed on Saturday about a dispute concerning a damaged car in the parking lot that belongs to his office. Wen felt irritated when the reporter wanted to interview him.

"I'm a government emissary. Ask your managing editor to contact me for the interview. You want to meet me? You got to be kidding?" he said.

"In the eye of some government officials, journalists are nothing but their subordinates," one netizen commented.

The Bijie City government hasn't responded to the incident. Realizing his inappropriate remarks, Wen contacted the Guizhou TV yesterday and said he was willing to settle the dispute, the Nanfang Daily reported today.
