Official killed mistress, chopped body, court told
A former district Party chief in Wenzhou City stood trial yesterday for allegedly killing his mistress and dismembering her body.
Prosecutors in Hangzhou charged Xie Zaixing, former Party chief of Wenzhou's Ouhai District, of murdering his mistress Shao Huiling.
Xie allegedly suffocated Shao, a female official, on November 15 during a fight in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Prosecutors said he then chopped up her body, stuffed it into four bags and sank them in a river.
The 48-year-old district chief met Shao during his tenure as deputy Party chief in Sanmen County of Wenzhou 10 years ago. Shao, 33, became his lover soon after. Xie helped her get a job in Hangzhou and frequently visited her.
Xie said yesterday that Shao was a nice woman who seldom disagreed with him. He tried to divorce his wife to marry Shao but couldn't make up his mind as his wife has depression and breast cancer.
The day of Shao's death, she fought with Xie, threatening to leave him for someone else. The fight escalated and Shao began to scream. Xie said he pulled Shao on the bed and put a quilt on her face to muffle her voice.
Xie said he thought Shao finally gave up the fight when she became quiet. But he soon found out Shao was dead. He told the court he wanted to take Shao to hospital but changed his mind because she was dead anyway.
He then cut off Shao's head, legs and arms to make the body easier to get rid of. He threw the body into a river in Wenzhou.
Xie then pretended Shao was still alive and fooled her family and friends for more than four months. Shao's family reported to police after they began to have doubts.
The bags stuffed with body parts and steel weights were discovered in the river and investigation led to Xie.
