Official on trial for killing mistress

A former district Party chief in Wenzhou City stood trial today for allegedly killing his mistress and dismembering her body.

Prosecutors in Hangzhou charged Xie Zaixing, former Party chief of Wenzhou's Ouhai District, of murdering his mistress Shao Huiling. The trial started at Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court at 9:30am.

The court has not yet reached a verdict.

Xie allegedly suffocated Shao, a female official, on November 15, 2009 during a fight in Hangzhou. Prosecutors say he later chopped up her body, stuffed it into four bags and sank them in a river.

He pretended Shao was still alive and fooled her family for more than four months. Shao's family reported her disappearance to police after they began to have doubts. The bags stuffed with body parts and steel weights were discovered in the river and investigation led to Xie.

The 48-year-old district chief met Shao during his tenure as deputy Party chief in Sanmen County 10 years ago. Shao, 33, became his lover soon after. Xie helped her get a job in the provincial capital of Hangzhou and frequently visited her.
