Official on trial for taking bribes

A COURT heard of a jobs-for-money network run by an official in Chaohu City in Anhui Province that led to the dismissal of 14 officials.

Zhou Guangquan, the former Communist Party secretary of Chaohu, was charged of accepting bribes worth 5 million yuan (US$735,000) on June 3.

Prosecutors said 19 of 36 people who allegedly bribed Zhou were government officials when he was secretary of the Communist Party of China Chaohu City Committee from 2000 to 2004.

The 19 officials were promoted after allegedly bribing Zhou and 14 have since been dismissed. Anqing City Intermediate People's Court did not reach a verdict.
