Official on trial over US$98m land losses
A FORMER top official in central China’s Hubei Province caused losses of public assets worth more than 610 million yuan (US$98 million) and took almost 3 million yuan in bribes, a court was told yesterday.
Chen Bohuai, 64, former vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference’s Hubei committee, was on trial at Fuzhou City Intermediate People’s Court for abuse of power and bribery.
Prosecutors said he illegally approved the use of state land allocated for non-commercial use for property development in return for bribes.
Chen was said to have transferred state land to two property development companies, taking cash and buying a villa at a greatly reduced price in return. He also took bribes from several Hubei companies, prosecutors said.
Chen was removed from his post and arrested in March.
The court hasn’t yet announced a verdict.
