Official probe into murdered couple
LOCAL government departments in northern China's Shanxi Province have responded to media speculation following the murder of a married police officer couple.
The population and family planning bureau in Hongtong County said Wang Jianxiong and his wife Han Huifang, who both worked in Hongtong County's public security bureau, had two daughters and a son but had withheld the truth about the birth of their second daughter.
The bureau was working with related departments to discipline those responsible for concealing the birth of their second daughter.
The county's public security bureau confirmed that the couple's three children were studying in the United States but did not say if the couple had been supporting them.
As for online rumors that the couple ran the Hongtong County Lusheng Coal Mine and the Hongtong County Dingxin Smelter, the bureau said that neither Wang nor Han had registered with the county's industry and commerce administrative bureau to establish the enterprises.
A county official said an investigation was under way to find out if Wang was the owner of the two businesses.
Three suspects have been detained in connection with the killings.
The couple's bodies were found on November 12 at their home in a building called Hong'an Mansion in downtown Hongtong County, Linfen City.
The grim discovery was made after the couple's children had failed to reach them on November 11 over the phone. The children contacted the couple's driver, who found their bodies the next day, according to media reports.
Wang had been strangled after sustaining knife wounds to his face and back. His wife had been suffocated.
Some media outlets reported that the couple owned a portfolio of properties, questioning how they managed to do so on police salaries of only 2,000 yuan (US$301) a month.
The Guangzhou-based 21st Century Business Herald reported rumors that the couple had been engaged in money lending at exorbitant interest rates.
The couple were said to have owned properties in the county as well as in Beijing and Hainan Province.
