AN official in southwestern China has been fined 5,000 yuan (US$733) and detained for 15 days for having sex with a girl under 14.
Lu Yumin, a taxation official in Yibin County, Sichuan Province, paid middlemen 6,000 yuan to have sex with a girl surnamed He, who was said to be a virgin, on December 27, according to Scol.com.cn, a news Web portal.
Lu was first detained on suspicion of rape, but Yibin police later said he had no idea of He's age. Having sex with a prostitute incurs a penalty of up to 15 days in prison and a fine up to 5,000 yuan.
The girl was taken by schoolmates surnamed Tu and Xu, and a restaurant owner, Mou, to a hotel to have sex with Lu. She later told an auntie and they went to police on March 3. Mou, Tu, Xu and He all received payment of up to 2,000 yuan.
On March 4 and 5, Tu, Xu, Mou and Lu were seized, along with another schoolmate surnamed Yan, who introduced He to Tu. Xu, Tu and Yan, all under 16, did not face criminal charges because of their age, but were punished with detention and fines.
Mou has been referred to Yinbin People's Procuratorate for allegedly introducing girls to prostitution.
Netizens questioned why Lu spent 6,000 yuan if he didn't know He was so young. Others criticized China's legal system for imposing such a small penalty on Lu, the report said.
