Official sacked for reservoir pollution

AN official has been sacked after renting out a reservoir to a film crew that then polluted the water supply for 300,000 residents.

The water authority of Yongkang City has removed Huang Xingfa from his position as director of the Yangxi Reservoir Irrigation Project Administration in Zhejiang Province, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

City officials reiterated that any extraneous activities around tap-water sources are prohibited.

The film crew has been ordered out of the reservoir area and the garbage they left there has been cleaned up, the Xinhua report said.

Tests show that the water quality is back to normal.

The filmmakers of the TV drama "The Romance of Three Kingdoms" have been filming at the reservoir since April last year, according to previous media reports.

Though the filmmakers had promised to protect the environment, crew members dumped disposable food boxes, wine bottles and a large amount of garbage in the reservoir.

There was a strong smell of diesel and fuel could be seen on the ground after battle scenes were shot in the area.

Huang told previous media reports that his administration had refused to rent out the reservoir area to the filmmakers. The administration finally agreed because it hoped the drama would promote the Yangxi Reservoir.

The administration had received a deposit of 20,000 yuan (US$2,930) from the filmmakers.

The drama crew, who denied to media that it polluted the environment in Yangxi, has left the reservoir, which is a major water source for local people.
