Official sacked over lavish funeral on campus

A tax official in the eastern Zhejiang Province was sacked for helping a rich family to hold a lavish funeral in a school playground that drew much criticism from the public.

Wenling City government announced the removal of a department director in the city's taxation bureau on Tuesday, Zhejiang Evening News reported today.

The headmaster of the Xinhe Middle School where the funeral took place also resigned, following the removal of the school's deputy headmaster who rented the playground.

Authorities said the funeral interrupted the school and local traffic and violated the local regulations on funeral rites.

Last week's funeral involved a fleet of Lincoln stretch limos, many monks, a marching band and thousands of spectators.
The funeral was held by Lin Dayu, chairman of Zhengtian Group which owns automobile and hotel businesses, for his mother. Lin and his five siblings each paid 1 million yuan for the event.

Lin has apologized to the public for creating bad influence in the society with the lavish funeral.
