Official seeks help for foreign AIDS patients
Foreigners accounted for 61 percent of all AIDS patients in Yunnan Province’s Dehong Prefecture last year, an area border with Myanmar on its north, west and southern borders, its deputy governor said yesterday.
Su Hongtao, who is calling for funds to control and prevent the disease specifically among foreigners, told China Youth Daily that in some areas they accounted for up to 83 percent of AIDS patients diagnosed in tests.
Those tested included drug abusers, prostitutes, pregnant women, people about to get married and others consulting about AIDS voluntarily, Su said.
It was not revealed how many AIDS patients there are in prefecture, which has a total population of more than 1.2 million. However, Yunnan has recorded 79,915 AIDS patients since 1985, and Dehong was listed as a major area for AIDS prevention and treatment in 2004, according to the People’s Daily.
Foreigners move more frequently and many can’t speak fluent Chinese, increasing difficulties in follow-up visits and management by medical staff and health officials, Su said.
