Official suspended after deadly protest
A TOWN chief in Jiangsu Province was suspended from his post after a 68-year old man and his 92-year old father set fire to themselves to protest against their home being demolished.
Tao Huixi died and his father Tao Xingyao is in a stable condition. Huangchuan township government admitted that its head Zhou Wenxing, who led a 100-strong demolition team and broke into the Tao house on Saturday, had no relocation order, Xinhua news agency reported today.
Zhou and the others did nothing to prevent the two setting themselves alight, said Tao's widow Hu Zhenxia.
His son Tao Qiuyu said the gasoline his father and grandfather poured on themselves was going to be used to expel the demolition crews. Tao Qiuyu said his father always told him that "a man must always protect his home, at any cost."
Tao Qiuyu said his father videotaped grandfather Tao vowing to die in the battle as he was holding a can of liquefied natural gas.
But the immolation did not distract the bulldozers, which tore down the house less than half an hour after the two burnt men were dragged out.
Li Baofu, spokesman of the local government, said they continued demolition to "prevent secondary disasters."
Huangchuan town official Wang Xianguang said the two set themselves on fire behind closed doors and there was no confrontation at all.
