Official suspended for turning off traffic lights

AN official was suspended after he ordered subordinates on Friday to cut the power at traffic lights at a downtown intersection in Liuzhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, creating a chaotic and dangerous scene, according to Xinhua news agency.

The official, surnamed Huang, who works for the city's lighting administration, was angry that his car was ordered to stop for a routine police check, according to the report.

The incident happened about 11am last Friday when a truck with the license plate GuiB35150 was stopped by traffic police. After waiting, the truck left the scene before officers checked the vehicle.

A police officer surnamed Wang called his colleague surnamed Zou and asked him to stop the truck at the next checkpoint. Zou stopped the truck, where Huang was sitting next to the driver, and confiscated the driver's license and ordered him to drive back to the previous checkpoint, according to the report.

Huang demanded the driver's license be returned and threatened to shut down the traffic lights.

At 12:15pm, the traffic lights at Hongguangqiao Road S. were turned off, creating a massive traffic jam in the area. The traffic lights were turned back on at 12:50pm after police contacted Huang's boss.

Huang and his boss were suspended on Saturday for violating work regulations and cutting off power to traffic lights without authorization. The city's discipline inspection commission said it is investigating the incident.
