Official under fire for puffing at meeting

A construction official in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province was given administrative punishment after pictures of him smoking a luxury cigarette at a government meeting appeared on the Internet.
Authorities said Zhou Zhaohua, deputy director of Tanshan New Town Construction Committee, had admitted to smoking cigarettes priced nearly 100 yuan (US$15.38) a packet during a meeting in May, the Modern Express reported today.
But Zhou said the cigarettes, at a price incompatible with his income, were a gift from his nephew. He acknowledged it was a mistake to smoke in public places as it violated the city's rules.
Authorities said Zhou reported to them to explain after the post sparked a controversy on the Internet on June 8. Some netizens compared him to Zhou Jiugeng, the former director of the city's Jiangning District Housing Management Commission, who was sacked after photos showing him wearing a Vacheron Constantin watch, smoking expensive cigarettes, and driving a Cadillac, caused an uproar on the Internet in 2008.
Zhou Jiugeng was sentenced to 11 years in jail for taking bribes. His properties worth of 1.2 million yuan was confiscated.
