Official's arrest adds to list of accident outrage
A LOCAL official in a central China county has been arrested after mowing down and killing five of a group of seven teenagers in a drunk driving crash on Sunday.
It was the latest in a series of traffic accidents involving officials that have caused public outrage.
Gu Qingyang, head of the post office of Luoning County in Luoyang City, Henan Province, was driving on the wrong side of the road when his car hit four boys and a girl aged between 13 and 16 at about 11:30pm. Three died at the scene, while the other two were pronounced dead in hospital, local police said.
Gu's car skidded about 280 meters after it hit the first victim before coming to a halt, police said.
The accident occurred less than two months after an official in neighboring Hebei Province hit the headlines when his son killed a college girl in a hit-and-run case.
Li Qiming, 22, was alleged to have said: "Sue me if you dare. My father is Li Gang" when stopped.
Li's father is a deputy district police chief in Baoding City. Internet users slammed the abuse of power by officials in a flurry of sarcastic jokes mocking the Li family.
Meanwhile, the meteorological department of Henan's Nanyang City has been under fire for spending 480,000 yuan (US$72,199) of taxpayers' money to compensate the families of three pedestrians killed by one of its officials. Yu Xiangjie, head of the meteorological office in Nanyang's Xixia County, was granted bail on health grounds despite a charge of vehicular manslaughter.
In August 2009, Liu Xingwen, a work safety official in Zibo City in Shandong Province, plowed his car into the rear of a truck under repair, killing two people and injuring four others.
In May 2009, the land and resources director of Jieshou City in Anhui Province, Ying Yunfeng, was involved in a hit-and-run in which one person died and four were injured.
In February, 2009, a taxation official was sacked and given 15 days' detention for harassing two policewomen when he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
And in December 2008, a vice director of the construction department of Weinan City, driving on the wrong side of the road, killed a cyclist.
