Officials defend school suspensions
COUNTY officials in an east China city have defended a decision to suspend school classes which affected more than 10,000 students.
They said it was a measure to ease traffic for an important government meeting.
Classes were suspended on Monday and Tuesday in Shucheng County of Anhui Provnce's Lu'an City but were made up on April 30 and May 8, today's Xin'an Evening News reported.
Cao Xianfa, Shucheng's deputy education director told the newspaper that the class suspension order was carried out under the guidance of the county government.
He said students affected were mostly with kindergardens, primary and middle schools in downtown area.
Shucheng's vice governor Yu Jing said an important meeting was being held on those tow days when a number of delegates were touring the county. Classes were suspended at downtown schools to prevent traffic jams.
Students complained that nobody had told them why their classes were suspended.
