Officials deny midwife claim
HEALTH authorities of Shenzhen City, in south China's Guangdong Province, have denied a patient's claim that a midwife had sewn up her anus up during her labor after the family failed to tip her extra cash.
There was no evidence supporting the claim after the authorities' preliminary investigation, Shenzhen Health Bureau and Shenzhen Population and Family Planning Commission said yesterday.
Instead the midwife had treated the patient for bleeding hemorrhoids during the patient's labor, which breached professional practice, health official Zhou Fu said.
The authorities have ordered Phoenix Hospital to improve its management.
The patient's husband surnamed Chen said his wife delivered the baby last Friday at the hospital. Chen gave Zhang 100 yuan (US$14) tip in a red envelope but said the midwife thought the sum was too meager.
