Officials dodge media probe into forest airport
FOREST authorities in Shennongjia Mountains in central Hubei Province refused to show public the environment assessment report for a controversial airport built in the primeval forest that raised an outcry about environmental damages.
The construction of the Shennongjia airport flattened five mountain tops and filled 217 karst caves in the national nature reserve in the past two years, media reports revealed.
Local officials insisted that the airport project posed no environmental threat because it had passed a strict environment assessment, and ecological restoration was carried out at the same time.
But environmental activists are unconvinced and irritated that local officials would not give details about the project until the airport is put into service on October 1, Beijing Morning Post reported today.
The Shennongjia Mountains are a natural habitat for many endangered animals and became famous after reported sightings of ape-like creatures similar to the Bigfoot in North America.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization added Shennongjia to its World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 1990.
