Officials held over tainted capsules
SIX government officials in Shaoxing City in Zhejiang Province have been put under investigation in connection with the toxic drug capsule scandal, which have aroused wide panic across the nation in April.
A section chief with Shaoxing drug watchdog, Lu Jiadong, and other five drug supervisors from Xinchang County, including the director and deputy head of the local drug administration, Liang Yonghua and Zhang Baiqing, were prosecuted for dereliction of duty.
They didn't strictly follow the rules to inspect the capsules, causing many drug makers to illegally use toxic industrial gelatin to produce medicine capsules containing excessive levels of chromium, prosecutors from the province said yesterday.
The Ministry of Public Security has confiscated 77 million tainted capsules, arrested nine suspects, detained 54 others and shut down eight capsule-manufacturing factories in Hebei, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces.
