Officials jailed over prisoner’s blackmail
TWO officials in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province were sentenced to one year in prison yesterday for dereliction of duty after a prisoner blackmailed women while behind bars.
Wang Ge, former secretary of Nehe Prison’s discipline inspection commission, and Liu Yang, an official with the prison management, failed to supervise staff and adhere to relevant prison regulations, Longjiang County People’s Court ruled.
Wang Dong, a Nehe inmate since December 2012, used messaging app WeChat to contact several women who lived near the prison and “establish romantic relationships with them,” the court said.
He extorted money from them by threatening to spread videos and pictures that showed them naked.
The case caused a public outcry about lax supervision in Chinese prisons.
Four former prison guards were jailed last year.
