Officials: no deaths or injuries in coal mine dispute
EIGHT people have been detained for blocking a coal mine in Huaping County in southwest China's Yunnan Province over a contract dispute, local authorities said yesterday.
The incident which was earlier described as a gang fight has drawn a lot of attention on the Internet. But officials said there was no gang fight or injuries.
On October 20 Li Shiyou, one of the detainees, gathered a group of people at the entrance of the coal mine to block its operation. Government officials soon arrived to mediate but were rejected. The blockage ended when police took Li and seven others into custody.
Li's brother transferred the mine to its current owner, Chen Zulin, early last year but the two parties later had a dispute over the contract. The case was settled in court this May with Chen winning a lawsuit.
But the October 20 incident was distorted in online rumors as a big gang fight involving more than 200 people and it left two dead and many injured.
A microblog posted last Friday claimed that Chen loaned 9 million yuan to Li's brother and later forced him to pay the debt with his coal mine.
