Officials ordered to quit golf club

MORE than 30 government officials have been ordered to quit a golf club that came under fire for bragging about its "high-ranking members."

The Wenzhou Golf Association published an advert in the Wenzhou Daily listing local government officials, including the city's vice mayor and a deputy secretary-general of the city government, as honorary chairmen. When it was posted online some commentators expressed surprise over officials joining an association which charges 398,000 yuan (US$58,500) membership.

"They are waving the government whips, grabbing the company cash, and only take the public service position as a part-time job," one was quoted as saying in the People's Daily.

Wenzhou's Communist Party boss yesterday ordered the officials to resign their memberships.

But several people on the list said they had no idea they were members.

An unnamed association official told People's Daily they had worked hard to convince officials to become nominal members "to make the association look good."
