Official's overstay in US sparks speculation

A government official in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, was removed from his post and local disciplinary authority is probing into his case after he overstayed nearly two months in the United States.

Liu Rongfu, former director of Huadu District's Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau in Guangzhou, went to the US on August 19 and later asked for medical leave for one month till October 7, claiming he had a traffic accident in the US. He hasn' returned since, Guangzhou Daily reported today.

Liu sent several work-related text messages to his colleagues while he was abroad, district authority said, denying that he had already been investigated before leaving China. No criminal evidence was found against him, they said.

The current investigation is just to find out why he overstayed in the US, the report quoted the authority as saying.

Liu'soverstay sparked speculation that he fled for fear of possible corruption charges in mid September. Phone calls and messages to him went unanswered.
