Officials penalized for lead poisoning case

TEN county officials, including the chief of Huaining County in Anhui Province, were punished for lead pollution which caused excessive lead levels in the blood of more than 200 children.

The officials were penalized for dereliction of duty, said a statement by Anqing City Government, which oversees Huaining, Anhuinews.com reported today.

Three children in Xinshan community in Gaohe Town were found to have abnormally high levels of lead in their blood at the Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital on December 24. Subsequent checks on 280 children found that more than 200 had excessive lead levels and 28 were treated in the hospital.

The local Borui Battery Co Ltd was found the cause of lead pollution and had been shut down. Huining police is still investigating the case, the statement said.
Under China's Environmental Protection Law, no polluting factory should be built within a radius of 500 meters from residential communities.
